Illustration, New Work, Pattern

Hey! I’ve got a show up at Transcend on Jasper here in Edmonton. I’ve been sitting on the Supper Settings idea for about a year and it has finally (excitingly!) come to life.
An installation of over thirty hand-drawn plates, two silkscreen prints, several framed drawings and textiles, a large poster print and one honest-to-goodness tree await you and your morning brew for the month of December. Y’all should come check it out! The series is for sale - I am selling the main wall’s installation of over twenty plates, two silkscreened prints and several framed drawings, along with a custom hanging in your home, with consideration to your space’s needs. $500 for all the pieces, and a little extra for the custom install. I can also sell some of the plates individually, so do contact me for details.
And that’s not all, my friends - the process of decorating the plates is foodsafe, so I am accepting commissions for all your culinary needs! You can pop down to Transcend Japser and let me know which ones you like, and I’d be happy to make some plates up just for you.
And with that, I’m off to Vancouver on the train (!!!) for a well deserved break. Ahhhh, sushi…

A great indulgence of mine is getting the Sunday New York Times delivered to my door here in Canada. Granted, it normally comes on Monday morning, so I can’t loaf around in my fuzzy slippers on Sunday devouring its pages like those south of the border do, but the paper is still an absolute pleasure to read through the week. One of the go-to bits of my precious New York Times newspaper is the 36 Hours… column in the Travel section, and was I ever excited to find out that a book of the collected columns has been put out by Taschen. The book looks like it’s dotted with lovely pictures and there are beautiful map illustrations by Italian illustrator Olimpia Zagnoli. Never waste a weekend, indeed - unless you live in Canada in which case this is the best form of armchair travel ever!

You guys, I’ve been BUSY BUSY BUSY! With the xmas Royal Bison Fair just a few short weeks away I thought I’d show you all a little bit of what I’ve got up my sleeve.
I’ve been teaching myself to dye fabric - yet another extension of my obsession with textiles. I’ve gotten my hands on a limited amount of super soft, perfectly draping, perfectly-architecturally-cut tunic tees, and I’ve spent some time seeing what comes of it. You really need to see these up close, the way they have dyed in places is downright magical. This here is a black one, but there will also be camel/beige, russet, olive, navy and perhaps a purple. Some might even have little white patterns drawn in places, we’ll see! They look great with a pair of jeans and a blazer, letmetellya.

Next up: plates! I’ve always wanted to translate my patterned drawings to household objects, and I’ve finally found a way to do it to plates in small multiples. These here are some of the royal blue and red collection, there’s also going to be a black (and teal?) collection. All of them are one-offs and handdrawn by yours truly. I’m so jazzed by this! Everything is food safe, oven safe, etc, though I wouldn’t run these babies through the dishwasher, the finish just needs a touch of care. Wouldn’t it be great to toss some olives in one of those long dishes? Yum!
More as the Bison approaches - I’ve got new silkscreened tea towels in the works, as well as hand dyed totes with leather straps. See you in late November! xo, Vikki

Another reason things have been a little slow lately is that I recently took a road trip across Canada. Yup, Edmonton to Quebec City, all 4,261km of it. It wasn’t my first drive across the country but probably my last for a while! I did get to spend some time with my dear old dad, who bought a nifty little camping trailer as a retirement adventure plan.
Anyways, I got dropped off in Montreal, where I spent a few glorious early-fall days wandering about before flying home. One of my favourite stops in Montreal (aside from all the bakeries) is the Drawn+Quarterly bookstore in Mile End. I can never leave without an armload of books, and this time part of my haul included Rebecca Kraatz‘s graphic novel Snaps. What attracted me to the book was the brushstrokes (and hairstyles!) in her panels, but beyond that, reading it is pure imaginative joy. Kraatz found a WWII era photo album at a flea market and made up of loosely intertwined stories for all the album’s inhabitants - what follows are some of the most imaginitive, sad, and touchingly beautiful moments these people may have never had. Pick it up for the tiny sum of $15 at Conundrum Press and see for yourself.
